Named for a Wall of Rock
According to the Texas Historical Commission, Rockwall County covers just 147 square miles, the smallest of the state's 254 counties. It was part of Kaufman County until 1873, and both the county and the city are named for an underground rock formation discovered in the early 1850s.
Lake Ray Hubbard shaped modern Rockwall. The reservoir, owned by the City of Dallas according to the Texas Water Development Board, turned farmland into lakefront and helped Rockwall grow from a farm town into a lakeside suburb.
